The title comes from Chess's practice of giving his artists a Cadillac to celebrate their first record and the film ends when he has a heart attack in 1969 at the age of 52 as he drives his own Cadillac away for the last time from his Chicago studio which has just closed down. It's a familiar tale of sex and drugs and rock'n'roll, irrigated by blood, sweat and tears as fortunes are made and lost. ![]() ![]() They started out directing their work at black audiences, appearing on charts and radio stations specialising in race music, before crossing over to perform for and sell records to general audiences in the late 1950s. They included Muddy Waters (Jeffrey Wright), Howlin' Wolf (Eamonn Walker), Chuck Berry (Mos Def) and Etta James (Beyoncé Knowles, who also produces), with Big Willie Dixon (Cedric the Entertainer) acting as narrator. Cadillac Records chronicles the rise of Leonard Chess' (Adrien Brody) Chess Records and its recording artists including Muddy Waters (Jeffrey Wright), Little Walter (Columbus Short), Chuck Berry (Mos Def), Willie Dixon (Cedric The Entertainer) and the great Etta James (Beyonce Knowles). C adillac Records is a film about the rise and fall of Chess Records, created just after the Second World War in Chicago by Leonard Chess (Adrien Brody), the ambitious son of Polish immigrants, to promote a roster of young black performers, mostly from the South. ![]()
